Why Brushless DC?

Because of their construction, brushless DC motors have several advantages as compared to other electric motors. Because commutation is accomplished electronically, brushless DC motors are capable of very high speeds and torque without arcing. Brushless motors have a lower thermal resistance and are capable of operating in a wider temperature range. The lack of brushes allows them to have a broad closed-loop speed range. Also, brushless motors have a higher torque to inertia ratio, high starting energies, and high breakaway torques. These advantages give brushless DC motors sophisticated motion control capabilities.

Brushless DC motors have a higher power density than AC as well as brush DC motors. Efficiency is also better with brushless motors. Typically brushless motors have 5-10% better efficiency than typical AC induction motors and 8-12% better efficiency than brush DC motors. Because they have lower thermal resistance, are capable of operating in wider temperature ranges, have higher torque to inertia ratios, and have greater acceleration, smaller brushless DC motors can do the same job that their much larger counterparts would otherwise be used for. This results in an overall cost reduction.

Brushless DC motors have the same advantages as DC motors using brushes, but because commutation is accomplished electronically, they offer many advantages as compared to brush DC motors. Brushless motors have improved system reliability. No brushes means a maintenance reduction and no brush residue contamination to bearings or the environment. There is no arcing associated with brushes, and therefore, are safer in explosive environments. Brushless DC motors are also safer in contact with fluids than brush DC motors. Because there is no brush arcing or brush commutation, brushless motors are much quieter both electrically and audibly.

High Performance Applications - BLM Series The BLM series of brushless DC motors is intended for high performance applications. Design features include high torque to inertia ratios, high operating efficiencies, and high power densities. BLM motors provide solutions for rigorous applications where the emphasis is on maximum performance and stringent specifications. In addition, they include custom features as requested by respective manufacturers.
High Power Applications - BLC Series The BLC series of brushless DC Motors is intended for higher power output applications. Design features include continuous torque capabilities up to 400 pound-inches and beyond. BLC motors provide solutions for those higher torque applications that extend beyond the ranges of SL-MTI's other products. In addition, they include custom features as requested by respective manufacturers.
Industrial Applications - BLLC Series The BLLC series of brushless DC Motors is intended for conventional industrial applications. Design features include the integration of quality materials with efficient production methods. BLLC motors provide cost-effective solutions for a broad array of industrial applications where the emphasis is on long operating life and performance, but where the operating specifications do not dictate the need for the BLM series. In addition, they include custom features as requested by respective manufacturers.
Commercial Applications - BVLC Series The BVLC series of brushless DC Motors is intended for less stringent commercial applications. Design features include the integration of less expensive materials with efficient production methods. BVLC motors provide solutions for less stringent applications where the emphasis is on higher volume and reduced cost. Medical Applications - BLCM Series The BLCM series of brushless DC Motors is designed for high performance medical applications. Like the BLM series, design features include high torque to inertia ratios, high operating efficiencies, and high power densities. For medical use, BLCM motors are also designed to withstand autoclave cleaning and sterilization under high steam pressure and temperature conditions. In addition, they include custom features as dictated by respective medical equipment manufacturers.
Limited Angle Torque Applications - LAT Series The LAT series of brushless DC motors is intended for actuator applications requiring a limited range of rotational movement. Design features include high torque to inertia ratios and high power densities. LAT motors provide a solution where there is a need for high torque and limited rotational movement within an angular range of +/- 30 or +/- 45 degrees. In addition, they include custom features as requested by respective manufacturers.
Integrated Assembly Applications - BWM Series The BWM series of integrated brushless DC motors is primarily intended for two applications: The first is where the drive system is to be integrated into the motor housing, to conserve on space and installation expense. The second is where a motor-drive system is to be integrated with a commercially available blower assembly for an air movement application. Blower assemblies can be customer-supplied, or purchased by SL-MTI. Custom features, electrical and mechanical, are available as requested by respective manufacturers.
